FEED YOUR FACE: Chocolate Can Give You Better Skin and a Thinner Figure

By Dr Jessica Wu

Those of you who have read Feed Your Face know that drinking cocoa with a high concentration of flavanol antioxidants has been shown to protect the skin from sunburn and other types of sun damage. (I bet there was no shortage of volunteers for that study!) In fact, after 12 weeks, these people had smoother skin with better circulation and hydration. Now, new research shows that those who eat a moderate amount of chocolate are thinner than those who don’t.

In a study of over 1,000 men and women who ate a balanced diet and exercised a similar amount, those who ate chocolate five times a week had a BMI (body mass index) that was one point lower than those who did not eat chocolate regularly. For a person who is five feet tall, one point is equivalent to five pounds; for someone five foot ten inches, that would be seven pounds. The researchers believe that antioxidants found in chocolate help burn calories by improving the body’s response to insulin and increasing metabolism.

However, chocolate can also be high in sugar and fat, so don’t let this be your excuse to pig out on Hershey’s Kisses. To get the highest antioxidant benefits of chocolate, choose dark chocolate containing 70% or higher cocoa content, which also has less added sugar than milk chocolate, and limit yourself to 100 calories of the sweet stuff a day.
