Feed Your Face: Oatmeal Cookie Scrub

Many of you have written to me to ask about DIY beauty products. If you have a copy of Feed Your Face, you know that I devote an entire chapter to foods and food-based ingredients that work best when applied topically. I also include a number of recipes for easy make-at-home treatments that use ingredients you probably already have in your fridge or pantry. Here’s one of my favorites:

Oatmeal Cookie Scrub (for oily skin and acne)

1/4 cup rolled oats
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons honey
1 tablespoon plain yogurt

This yummy scrub can be particularly effective for those of you with oily skin. Oats contain proteins called saponins that help dissolve oil while cleaning dirt and makeup from your pores. Be sure to use rolled oats and not instant oatmeal, which will turn into a gummy mess as soon as it gets wet. The yogurt contains lactic acid, a mild, naturally occurring form of alpha hydroxy acid, to help loosen dead skin cells and unclog pores. Oats can soak up a lot of liquid, so if the scrub feels too dry to massage into your skin, continue adding honey until it becomes easier to work with. And I suggest using a drain trap so your sink doesn’t get clogged.
